Vacuum Furnace Seal Face Machining

Overview

Following an accidental spillage of molten alloy steel inside a vacuum Furnace, the door seal became distorted, preventing the oven from achieving an effective airtight seal. The client required an urgent, highly accurate on‑site machining solution to restore the sealing face and avoid extended downtime.

Challenge

The vacuum Furnace door measured 5,200 mm in diameter, presenting a significant machining challenge due to its scale and the need for precision across the full circumference. The distorted seal face had to be fully restored to ensure safe and reliable operation once the furnace returned to service.

Our Approach

Benroc Engineering conducted a detailed site survey to assess the distortion and determine the most effective repair method. The work involved:

  • Mobilising a large orbital milling machine suitable for machining the 5.2‑metre‑diameter seal
  • Coordinating with a local lifting contractor to safely position the heavy equipment
  • Operating on a 24‑hour schedule to meet the client’s urgent requirements

Working continuously, our team removed 10 mm from the seal face and machined the entire diameter to restore flatness and ensure a perfect sealing surface.

Results

The machining was completed within four days, and the furnace door once again sealed correctly, allowing the client to resume normal operations without prolonged interruption.

What this Demonstrates

This project demonstrates Benroc Engineering’s capability to deliver rapid, high‑precision on‑site machining on large‑scale industrial equipment, even in time‑critical and high‑stakes environments.
