Deep Hole Drilling on an Extrusion Press
Overview
We were engaged to carry out precision deep hole drilling on an extrusion press platen. The project required six holes, each 30mm in diameter and 430mm deep, to allow ejector pins to pass through accurately into the mould tooling. All work was completed on site within a strict timescale, as the machine was due to enter service.
The Challenge
The key challenges were:
- Drilling six 30mm diameter holes to a depth of 430mm
- Maintaining precise positional accuracy for ejector pin alignment
- Working within the constraints of the assembled press
- Meeting a tight deadline
Any deviation in alignment could have led to installation issues and delays to commissioning.

Our Approach
To ensure accuracy and repeatability, we designed and manufactured a bespoke drilling jig at our workshop. This allowed precise positioning and stability throughout the operation.
Our on-site machining team carefully installed and aligned the jig before carrying out the drilling works, maintaining strict control to achieve the required tolerances.
Results
- Six holes drilled accurately to specification
- Correct alignment achieved for ejector pin installation
- Project completed on schedule
- Extrusion press commissioned without delay
What This Demonstrates
This project demonstrates our ability to deliver high-precision on-site machining solutions, including deep hole drilling, bespoke tooling design, and reliable completion within tight operational timeframes.
