Bump Stop

Overview

During a major shutdown, a steel mill required precise in‑line boring of the main bearings on a critical bump stop assembly. Accurate alignment was essential to ensure smooth, reliable operation once the system was reinstated. Previous temporary repairs had concealed underlying issues rather than resolving them.

Challenge

The work needed to be carried out within a tight shutdown window, with no allowance for delays. Maintaining correct alignment across the bores was crucial, as any deviation would have affected the performance and reliability of the bump stop mechanism.

Our Approach

Benroc Engineering mobilised our specialist in‑line boring equipment and carried out a detailed inspection to assess the true condition of the assembly. During the process, our team identified a 6 mm alignment error across the steel struts—an issue that had previously gone undetected and would have resulted in further operational problems had it not been corrected. Our team:

  • Machined the bores back into alignment
  • Corrected the 6 mm structural misalignment
  • Manufactured new bronze bushes to exact tolerances
  • Installed the bushes and verified final geometry and bearing position

This ensured that the bump stop would operate reliably and with optimal load distribution.

Results

The project was completed on time and on budget, with no impact on the wider shutdown schedule. The bump stop was reinstated with correct alignment and full operational capability, ensuring long‑term reliability for the steel mill.
