Restoring a Dock Side Crane to Full Working Order
Overview
A major steel mill in South Wales contacted Benroc Engineering after discovering excessive wear in several critical pivot pin bores on their Dock‑side crane. The machinery is essential for unloading incoming ships, so fast turnaround and reliable results were vital.
The Challenge
The worn 325mm bores needed machining to accept sleeves to return them to original size and tolerances. Working at height in windy, unpredictable coastal weather conditions made the project more complex, and all equipment had to be lifted onto the crane’s upper platform without disrupting ongoing operations.

Our Approach
Our engineering team deployed specialist in‑line boring equipment and worked methodically to:
- Re-machine the worn bores oversize.
- Install new precision manufactured sleeves.
- Maintain full safety control while working at height
- Manage several weather-related interruptions without affecting quality or schedule
Our experience working in challenging on‑site environments ensured the project stayed on track.
The Result
We successfully restored the crane’s bores to full operational condition and completed the job before the next scheduled vessel arrival. This prevented costly delays and minimised downtime.
What this Demonstrates
This project showcases Benroc Engineering’s ability to deliver:
- Precision repairs in difficult environments
- Strict safety management
- Reliable completion within tight timeframes
- Confidence and peace of mind for heavy‑industry clients
